Hotondo

Meaning: Almost, scarcely, hardly, little, few.

When to use?
It is commonly used in affirmative and negative sentences.

1) In affirmative sentence

Shiken wa hotondo owarimashita.
Hiragana: しけんはほとんどおわりました。
Kanji: 試験は殆んど終わりました。

= The examination is almost finished.

2) In negative sentence

Senshuu wa hotondo eigo wo benkyou shimasen deshita.
Hiragana:  せんしゅうはほとんどえいごをべんきょうしませんでした。
Kanji: 先週は殆んど英語を勉強しませんでした。

= I have hardly studied English last week.
