Igai
Meaning: Besides, other than, except (for), but, in addition to.
When to use?
It is often followed by the particle ni or wa.
1) After noun
Nichiyoubi igai wa mainichi daigaku ni ikimasu.
Hiragana: にちようびいがいはまいにちだいがくにいきます。
Kanji: 日曜日以外は毎日大学に行きます。
= I go to university every day except Sunday.
Zasshi igai wa amari nani mo yomimasen.
Hiragana: ざっしいがいはあまりなにもよみません。
Kanji: 雑誌以外はあまり何も読みません。
= Other than the magazine I read almost nothing.
Zasshi igai wa amari nani mo yomimasen.
Hiragana: ざっしいがいはあまりなにもよみません。
Kanji: 雑誌以外はあまり何も読みません。
= Other than the magazine I read almost nothing.
2) After dictionary form of verb
Nigeru igai ni houhou ga arimsen.
Hiragana: にげるいがいにほうほうがありません。
Kanji: 逃げる以外に方法がありません。
= There is no other way except to run away.
