Ijou

Meaning: More than, mentioned-above, over, no more, now that, as long as, since.

When to use?


1) After noun expressing length, quantity or price

Soko made iku no ni ni-jikan ijou kakarimasu.
Hiragana: そこまでいくのににじかんいじょうかかります。
Kanji: そこまで行くのに2時間以上かかります。

= It will take more than two hours to get there.

Kono michi wa ni kirometoru ijou arimasu.
Hiragana: このみちはにきろめとるいじょうあります。
Kanji: この道は2キロメトル以上あります。

= This road is more than two kilometers long.

2) Followed by no + noun

Nijuu-issai ijou no hito shika hairemasen.
Hiragana: にじゅういっさいいじょうのひとしかはいれません。
Kanji: 21才以上の人しか入れません。

= Only people who are twenty one and above are allowed to enter.

3) After the demonstrative pronouns, kore, are, sore, etc.

Kore ijou wa muri desu.
Hiragana: これいじょうはむりです。
Kanji:  これ以上は無理です。

= Any more than this is impossible.

4) At the end of a clause

Koko made yatta ijou, tsuzukemashou.

Hiragana: ここまでやったいじょう、つづけましょう。
Kanji: ここまでやった以上、続けましょう。

= As long as we've come this far, let's continue.
